Manager leaves

Catalyst Paper Corporation’s Powell River division general manager is no longer with the company.

Lyn Brown, Catalyst’s vice-president corporate relations, said the company and Rick Maksymetz, who started as general manager in Powell River in March 2011, “have parted ways.” Catalyst has appointed Stew Gibson, who was mill manager prior to Maksymetz, as manager on an interim basis, said Brown. “It’s fortunate that Stew was available,” she said. “He knows the mill and he knows the community well and he was able to step in immediately. We’re confident he’s going to provide the leadership required for the mill.”

The change is a vote of confidence in the mill’s operation, Brown added. “It’s making some of our most high-quality grades, so we don’t want to lose any performance gains or lose any ground as a result of the leadership change at the mill.”

Maksymetz is moving on to do other things, Brown said. “It’s not unexpected to see changes and we wish him well in whatever his next pursuit is.”

Gibson was Powell River mill manager from May 2008 until he was appointed Catalyst’s manager of special projects.
