Stray flare warning
Texada Island residents are being warned by the Royal Canadian Air Force to be wary of flares and smoke canisters that may wash up on shore.
Texada Island falls within an active pyrotechnic range used by 19 Wing Comox to train search and rescue crews in the safe and effective use of high intensity parachute flares and marine smoke markers. Though both devices are designed to sink after use, they may wash ashore before this happens.
The range is situated in the Strait of Georgia, west of Texada Island.
Flares and smoke canisters can be hazardous if mishandled and should not be picked up or kept as souvenirs.
Anyone who believes they have found or have in their possession any object that may be an explosive or military pyrotechnic, is asked to notify local police or 19 Wing Comox Operations Centre at 1.866.488.0889. Arrangements will be made to dispose of it safely.
Treaty vote proceeds
BC Supreme Court denied a request by a protest group to stop the Tla’amin (Sliammon) First Nation treaty vote scheduled for yesterday, July 10.
Protectors of Sliammon Sovereignty sought an injunction to prevent the vote from proceeding. The group blocked the polling station on June 16. The band subsequently obtained an injunction to prohibit the protestors from blocking the polling station and rescheduled the vote to July 10.
The poll closed at 8 pm on Tuesday, after the Peak went to press.
