Police enforce helmet law

Powell River RCMP will be stopping motorcycles riders throughout the community to enforce new laws that came into effect in BC on June 1.

“These laws help to keep motorcycle riders and their passengers safe throughout the riding season,” said Constable Chris Bakker. “They address the issues of non-approved or beanie-style helmets being used while riding as well as how riders and their passengers must be seated on the motorcycle.”

All motorcycle helmets must now meet safety standards and display the proper labels.

Failure to comply could lead to the seizure of the helmet by police as well as a $138 fine.

The new seating laws require that the operator must be seated astride the driver’s seat and passengers must be seated behind the operator astride the passenger’s seat with their feet on foot pegs or the floorboards, or be properly seated in a sidecar.

The operator is also responsible to ensure that any passengers younger than 16 are properly seated, which means that anyone who can not reach the foot pegs are not permitted to ride as passengers.

Judicial okay

A BC Supreme Court judge approved Catalyst Paper Corporation’s financial restructuring plan on Friday, June 29. Justice Robert Sewell approved the deal, which allows the company to emerge from creditor protection with its debt cut by 60 per cent, from $650 million to $250 million. Creditors voted 99 per cent in favour of the plan on Monday, June 25, after turning down an initial plan by a narrow margin in May.
