May weather
Weather for the month of May continued to be warmer and drier than seasonal averages and a Powell River weather observer says to expect that trend to continue through the summer.
The average temperature for the month was 13.7° Celsius with a maximum mean temperature of 18.4° and a mean minimum of nine degrees.
The month’s average was about two degrees warmer than the climate data average of 11.9° with a deviation of 1.2°. That number is based on almost 30 years of data, collected between 1981 and 2010, by Environment Canada.
“We were definitely warmer for May,” said observer Vanessa Ede. “I’ve been saying we’re going to have a warmer summer for a while now—just look at the winter we had.”
The warmest day of the month was recorded on Thursday, May 15, when the mercury hit 25.5°, while the coolest day was recorded on Wednesday, May 7, at 3.6°.
May was also a drier month. Precipitation was recorded at 55.4 millimetres over the month, much drier than the average 76.6 millimetres the area usually receives.
Last month was also sunnier with 240 hours of sunshine compared to the average 226.9 hours.

Setting it straight
Ray and Marion Vasseur were misidentified in last week’s Peak. The story about National Health and Fitness Day should also have mentioned that pickle ball is being played indoors at Oceanview Education Centre (7105 Nootka Street) gymnasium on Mondays from 4 to 6 pm, Wednesdays 6 to 8 pm and Saturdays 1 to 4 pm until the end of June.
