Distracted driving penalties

British Columbians are being asked their opinions about increased penalties for distracted drivers.

In a survey open until July 16, the province is asking for feedback whether the current $167 and three penalty points is sufficient to deter behaviour that is the second-leading cause of traffic accidents in BC.

A press release announcing the survey, includes sample questions, such as “should drivers caught texting face greater sanctions than those talking on a hand-held device? Should new drivers or repeat offenders face greater penalties? Should sanctions such as prohibitions and vehicle impoundments be considered?”

Readers can visit the website to access the survey.

Setting it straight

A ballerina in one of the photographs in the June 3 Peak of participants at Performing Arts BC Provincial Festival Powell River 2015 was incorrectly identified. Photograph two was of Layla Hamnett, junior ballet runner-up from Pacific West Festival, not Kiana Bell of Surrey Festival of Dance as noted in the paper.

Setting it straight

In an article in the Peak, June 17, about Tla’amin (Sliammon) First Nation elder Dr. Elsie Paul, her traditional name, Qaxustala’s, was incorrectly spelled. Additionally, Tsow-Tun Le Lum Substance Abuse and Trauma Treatment Centre was misspelled and incorrectly located in Tla’amin. The centre is located in Lantzville, on Vancouver Island. The Peak regrets these errors.
