Shoulder work

Work to clean up Marine Avenue’s shoulder from Gerrard to Massett streets is complete.

According to the ministry of transportation and infrastructure (MoT) the work will help avoid potential slumps along the stretch of waterfront during the wet season.

“We have to clear areas at times when the turf builds up to the point that it no longer allows water to run off along the highway,” said Clint Monson, MoT area manager.

The work was completed by the ministry’s contractor Capilano Highway Services.

Monson explained that this past season the turf on the shoulder was causing runoff to channel along the road and was contributing to bank saturation in certain locations.

Bank saturation increases the risk of potential landslides.

Monson added the work was done at this time of year so that the area would have a chance to stabilize before the wet season sets in during the fall.

Service notice

A sailing cancellation could affect Father’s Day travel plans.

BC Ferries is cancelling the first sailing of the Island Sky from Saltery Bay to Earl’s Cove, leaving at 6 am and 7 am respectively on Sunday, June 15. Regular sailings will resume with the 8 am sailing from Saltery Bay.

The disruption of service is due to required maintenance on the vessel.
