Garden tour help

Powell River’s Spring Garden Tour committee is at a crossroads. The tour has been a mainstay for late spring and this year it is scheduled for Sunday, June 14. However, the tour might not happen.

The decision comes down to not having enough gardens to put on the tour. The committee requires at least 10 and by press time only has six.

Anyone willing to have their garden placed on the tour will need to contact Diana Wood, 604.485.2860 by Monday, March 23.

The committee is also looking for more members to help organize the tour and anyone wishing to volunteer can contact Wood. The tour is self-guided, with tickets including a map of the gardens.

The tour generates funds for an annual scholarship of $750 to a graduating high school student who is pursuing further education in plant science. Plus, other proceeds go toward Powell River Botanic Garden Society.

After-school care

Henderson Elementary School principal Kristen Brach is working to create an after-school program for latchkey students at the Townsite neighbourhood school.

Since making a presentation to Powell River Board of Education trustees, the project has been given approval. The program will provide games and a fun learning environment similar in fashion to a summer recreation program with a heathy snack for a nominal fee from parents, Brach said.

The board expressed its interest and support for the program and suggested that Brach look to the community for additional support.
