Rescue effort involves coast guard
A distressed boater was plucked from the rocky shores of Jervis Inlet Thursday, February 27, in a joint rescue effort between the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Coast Guard.
19 Wing Comox’s 442 Squadron launched its CC-115 Buffalo airplane and CH-149 Cormorant helicopter after the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria picked up the injured boater’s onboard personal locator beacon.
The man was injured after his 16-foot (five-metre) aluminum craft ran aground near a rocky wall channel south of Powell River. He was able to signal to a passing boater who helped the man to the shore and built a fire to keep him warm.
Search and rescue technicians arrived on scene at 7 pm and had to be lowered 80 feet (24 metres) into the rugged area to evacuate the man. The rescue efforts were supported by the Canadian Coast Guard’s Cape Caution vessel which also responded and helped to illuminate the area with its search lights.
The man was airlifted to Powell River where he was transferred in stable condition to BC Ambulance Service.
Spring forward removes an hour
Daylight savings time for 2014 begins this weekend, robbing most Canadians of an hour of sleep but providing more light in the evenings. All readers are reminded to set clocks forward by one hour before going to bed on Saturday night. Time springs forward at 2 am Sunday, March 9.
