Scam alert

One Powell River woman is warning others to beware after she was almost the victim of an email phishing scam.

She said that about a month ago she received an email which looked like it was from Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) telling her that she had over $700 coming to her and she only had to claim it.

Phishing scams allow criminals access to confidential information and could lead to identity theft and fraud.

The federal agency has seen an increase in these types of scams and has been warning the public to be aware. According to CRA, these emails often have its logo or Internet links which appear official, but some contain obvious grammar and spelling mistakes. If someone receives a suspicious email, they are asked to contact the RCMP to report it. For more information about how to protect against scams, readers can visit CRA’s website.

Parent support

Parents who registered for the BC government’s parent support program during September’s school strike have started to receive their cheques, and those who have yet registered have until the end of January to do so.

The temporary education support payment is intended to help parents of students 12 years old and under with the added costs of learning and supervision as a result of the labour disruption. The payment, $40 per day, covers the 13 school days from September 2 to 18 when teachers ratified the collective agreement. Registration can be completed online.
