Knockout punch

Quick action from mill emergency response and Powell River fire crews prevented a fire at Catalyst Paper Corporation from spreading, Wednesday afternoon, November 12.

Terry Peters, Powell River Fire Rescue deputy chief, said his firefighters were called at 2:05 pm to the paper mill after a fire was reported in the thermo-mechanical processing building, where the mill’s pulp creation takes place. Firefighters found “a significant fire in one of the cyclones.”

Flames shot through the roof via the machine’s venting and the building was full of smoke. The fire was difficult to put out because of its location within the machine, said Peters. “If it would have broken out we would have had quite a different scenario,” he said.

Fire crews were on the scene throughout the afternoon.

Icy roads

Clear nights and dipping temperatures have made for slippery road conditions, as some drivers south of town discovered.

Two vehicles slid off Highway 101 and ended up in the ditch just south of the Lois River Bridge, Wednesday morning, November 12.

Passing motorists crossing the bridge noticed a flipped over car in the ditch just after 8:30 am. Not long after, a truck spun out of control due to the frosty conditions and ended up in the same ditch. Witnesses at the accident scene assisted while others stood at either end of the bridge warning drivers to slow down.
