Good government
BC Treaty Commission has launched a publication that tells the story of the relationship between the City of Powell River and Tla’Amin (Sliammon) First Nation.
Ayjoomixw recounts the story of Powell River’s sea walk, a project that initially divided the city and Tla’Amin, but which became the catalyst for an intergovernmental agreement. The agreement is intended to bring economic and social benefits to both Tla’Amin and the city.
The city handed over a $1.6 million budget for the sea walk project to Tla’Amin in 2002 after city workers disturbed cultural sites, including petroglyphs and shell middens. In June 2004, Tla’Amin and the city signed a protocol agreement to protect and promote the culture and heritage of the region and to explore joint economic ventures.
Today, the Tla’Amin flag flies alongside the flags of Powell River and British Columbia at the viewpoint in Westview and in council chambers at city hall. Government-to-government discussions are held six times a year.
The treaty commission distributed the publication at the UBCM (Union of BC Municipalities) convention.
