Nominations packages for City of Powell River council and Board of Education trustee positions are now available at city hall.

Powell River residents will be casting ballots for one candidate for mayor, six candidates for councillors and five candidates for school district trustees for the 2011 local government election. General voting day is Saturday, November 19. Advance voting will be held on Wednesday, November 9 and Wednesday, November 16.

Marie Claxton, chief election officer, will accept nominations for council and school trustees from Tuesday, October 4 to Friday, October 14. All nominations for mayor and councillor must include a deposit of $100.

A person is qualified to be nominated, elected and hold office if he or she is: a Canadian citizen; at least 18 years old on election day; has lived in BC for at least six months; and has not been disqualified from voting in an election in BC. There is no requirement that a candidate must reside within city boundaries.


Heat records

A stretch of warm, sunny weather this September created record temperatures in Powell River.

New high temperature records were set on September 7, 8, 9 and 11, according to the Powell River weather station. As well, John Ede, weather observer at the weather station, said the record temperature of 28.9° Celsius set on September 9 was the highest temperature all year.

The following records were set: September 7, 26.3°, breaking the 26° record from 1993; September 8, 27.1°, breaking the 26° record set in 1989; September 9, 28.9°, breaking the 27.2° record set in 1963; and September 11, 26.2°, breaking the 26.1° record set in 1975.
