By-election
Members of Klahoose First Nation are casting ballots for a chief councillor after the resignation of Ken Brown this summer.
Six candidates are vying to be chief: James Delorme, Kathy Francis, Mavis KÖk, Trevor Leduc, Maxie McGee and Ray Noble. A poll is being held from 9 am to 8 pm Saturday, October 15 at the Klahoose Multi-Purpose Centre at Squirrel Cove on Cortes Island. Mail-in ballots are also available.
Brown resigned as chief on July 11. A new chief will fill out the rest of the term, until April 9, 2013.
In a letter to band members posted on the Klahoose website, Brown said he was resigning for a myriad of reasons. “The most important of which is my desire to reconnect with my family who have seen very little of me through the last five years,” he wrote. “When I look back on what has been accomplished it is nothing short of remarkable. Difficult decisions were made and at times it became very tumultuous, but based on the overwhelming support in three consecutive elections it’s very clear we made the right decisions.”
Boot drive
Firefighters will be passing the boot next week in an annual drive to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
Members of Powell River Professional Fire Fighters Association will have a boot out on Friday and Saturday, September 23 and 24, at Town Centre Mall at WalMart and Save-On-Foods and at Safeway.
Members of Malaspina Volunteer Fire Department will also have their boots out from 11 am to 4 pm on Saturday, September 24 at the Fall Fair on McLeod Road and the Black Point Store.
