With the darker days of fall and winter Powell River police are reminding pedestrians and cyclists to increase their visibility.
“In BC, on average, 76 per cent more pedestrians are injured in crashes from November to January compared to June to August,” said Constable Tim Kenning, Powell River RCMP. “With the decrease in daylight hours and changes in weather pedestrians are extremely vulnerable.”
Kenning added that people who usually walk or ride their bicycles to and from work are now likely doing so in the dark.
To increase pedestrian visibility, the police and the Insurance Corporation of BC are providing reflectors free of charge.
These reflectors can be clipped to jackets, backpacks, strollers, bikes, said Kenning.
They are available at the Community Policing Office at Town Centre Mall or the RCMP detachment, while quantities last.
