Funds support food bank
Powell River Regional District directors agreed with a recommendation from the Rural Services Committee to authorize financial assistance in the amount of $1,118 to Powell River Action Centre Food Bank. The funds were provided from three of the electoral areas with Area A contributing $500, Area B contributing $118 and Area C $500.
This recommendation comes on the heels of an announcement that BC has the highest child poverty rate in Canada, with one in five children living statistically below the poverty line. In November 2013, BC’s child poverty rate was at 18.6 per cent compared to the national rate of 13.3 per cent, statistics that have prompted provincial poverty advocates and policy makers to consider developing sustainable poverty reduction strategies.
