Powell River Regional District board directed staff at its meeting on Thursday, May 25, to proceed with plans to replace Malaspina Volunteer Fire Department’s fire apparatus as outlined in the current financial plan. The board also directed staff to proceed with seeking elector support using an alternate approval process in order to increase tax collection in south-of-town electoral areas to fund the fire department.

Purchases additional office space
The regional district board announced it had purchased another unit at the Gibson’s Crossing II building on Marine Avenue, where the regional district’s office is currently located, for $280,000. Board chair Patrick Brabazon said the local government’s space was too small to house its current operations. He added that the board anticipates taking possession of the unit in December. The unit is currently occupied by a lessee who has a one-year lease renewal option.

Approves horse barn
The regional district board approved Powell River Therapeutic Riding Association’s designs for construction of a new horse barn at Paradise Exhibition Park. The new shelter will include room for eight animals and be constructed adjacent to the existing paddocks and barn at the park.

Supports Haslam Lake boat ramp
The regional district board supported Powell River Outdoor Recreation Users Group Trails Society’s application to the BC Ministry of Lands, Forests and Natural Resource Operations for construction authorization of a non-motorized boat launch near Duck Lake Road.
