Updates VCH food service issue
Powell River Regional District Electoral Area C director Colin Palmer reported at the regular regional district board meeting on January 25 that he attended a Vancouver Coastal Health liaison meeting where all the issues regarding VCH local operations were discussed, including controversy about food service for hospital patients and residents of seniors-care facilities. Palmer said senior staff members have seen a marked improvement in food quality after attending unannounced during meal times and eating the food. Staff is also satisfied the kitchen, operated by multinational conglomerate Sodexo Food Services, is providing food good enough for the patients and residents to eat, according to Palmer, but are upset about negative publicity associated with the food service and are facing difficulty trying to counteract it.

Receives development opposition correspondence
Regional district board of directors received correspondence from Nootka Street residents expressing opposition to a high-density development of 55 residential lots located on what was formerly Nootka Dunes Golf Club. All correspondence the planning committee has dealt with alleges that the proposed development is in violation of the Nootka Street zoning bylaw. Electoral Area B alternate director Alan Rebane said the issues are being addressed and there have been meetings with residents and the developer. Board chair Patrick Brabazon said emotions are rather high in some areas and the matter is under review by the planning committee.
