District receives grant approval

School District 47 administrators were pleased to learn that their grant application for upgrades, worth more than $400,000 at Brooks Secondary School’s welding shop, had been approved. The only catch—the funding organization does not have any money to give.

Project Shop Class took grant applications from most school districts in the province who were looking to improve trades education in their schools, said Jay Yule, district superintendent of schools at the March Powell River Board of Education meeting. “The good news is that we’ve been approved,” said Yule. “The bad news is that they don’t have any money.”

School calendars

School district administrators have wrapped up their consultation with district employees and parents on the proposed school calendars for the next three years. After receiving feedback some professional development days were changed in the draft calendar. With 30 days’ notice the school calendar can be changed usually for altering early dismissals and professional days or for provincial exams. The consultation process is mostly related to establishing dates for spring break vacation.
