Year-end finances

School District 47 secretary treasurer Steve Hopkins presented the audited financial statements for fiscal year 2010/2011 for adoption by the Board of Education. At $23.2 million, the final operating revenue for the year was up slightly from the amended annual budget of $22.9 million and up from the previous year’s budget of $22.7 million. Hopkins explained that was in part due to School District 47’s trades coordinator going to Vancouver Island University and the resulting gain in revenue to offset the position’s salary. At just over $23 million, the district’s operating expenses came in over $400,000 lower than the amended budget but higher than the previous year’s expenses. The board passed the motion to adopt the budget.

Construction upgrades

Hopkins provided an update on construction projects around the district. The field house at Brooks Secondary School is nearing completion and will be ready for use by the school and potentially for after hours community events. Construction of the main lodge at the district’s property at Haywire Bay is underway. The 2,000 square foot building will serve as a mess hall and event space for the camp being built on the property. Renovations to the Powell River Gymnastics Society building are almost finished, which is being leased to the society by the district.
