School board trustees and three rural directors win by acclamation

All candidates meeting takes place next week for mayor and council positions

School District 47 Board of Education trustees and directors in Powell River Regional District electoral areas A, C and D have been elected by acclamation. Official notice of the results was issued on Monday, October 24.

Steve Formosa, Mary James, Aaron Marie Reid, Jeanette Scott and Doug Skinner will be serving on the board of education for the next three years. Successful in winning another three-year term on the regional district board are Colin Palmer, Area C, Patrick Brabazon, Area A, and Dave Murphy, Area D.

The regional district is holding an election in Electoral Area B to elect one regional district director and in Electoral Area E, Lasqueti Island, to elect one regional district director and two trustees for the Islands Trust.

Incumbent Stan Gisborne and Kim Barton-Bridges are running for Area B director. On Lasqueti, incumbent Merrick Anderson is facing Timothy Peterson.

Powell River residents have an opportunity to hear candidates’ views on a variety of issues at an all candidates meeting at 7 pm on Tuesday, November 1 in the Evergreen Theatre at Powell River Recreation Complex. Hosted by Powell River Chamber of Commerce, the meeting includes a question and answer period, which will take place after candidate statements.

Mayor Stewart Alsgard and Councillor Dave Formosa are the only candidates running for the mayor’s position, while Russell Brewer, Gordon Crawford, Debbie Dee, Maggie Hathaway, Glenn Holstine, Bill Hopkins, Myrna Leishman, Scott Lukianchuk, Chris McNaughton and Jim Palm are running for council.

General voting day is Saturday, November 19. Advance polls will be held from 8 am to 8 pm on Wednesday, November 9 and November 16 at the complex for city voters.

The regional district is holding an advance poll for Area B voters from 8 am to 8 pm on Wednesday, November 9 at the regional district office, 5776 Marine Avenue.

Area B is located between the city’s eastern boundary to the west side of Whalen Road. The area also includes all of Paradise Valley, properties bordering the city along Claridge Road, Nootka Street, Covey Street and Tanner Street, as well as water and land lots on the eastern half of Powell Lake to Dago Point.
