School District 47 will be receiving more than $900,000 in provincial funding for school upgrade projects.
Powell River – Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons stated in a media release that students in Powell River are going to see more green, efficient and safe learning spaces.
“Students, staff, and the school communities will all benefit from these upgrades,” stated Simons. “With this funding, we are investing in better and more environmentally-friendly learning spaces.”
The Powell River school district is receiving $918,903 in funding for school maintenance projects, including:

Roof replacement at Brooks Secondary and Texada Elementary schools

Electrical system upgrades and lighting upgrades at Brooks

Electrical system upgrades and solar power system implementation at Edgehill Elementary School

One new school bus
According to the media release, these funding programs are part of a $217.7-million investment under the annual facilities grant (AFG), school enhancement program, carbon neutral capital program, building envelope program and bus acquisition program, to ensure students have well-maintained learning environments and bus services that are safe, comfortable and efficient. This year’s funding is $32.3-million higher than it was in 2016-17.
