School threat triggers multi-agency response

Officials offer youth 24-hour care

by Kyle Wells [email protected] A letter was sent home with students of Brooks Secondary School on Wednesday, September 7 to address rumours regarding threats made by a student against the school’s students and staff.

School District 47 and Powell River RCMP are being cautious over revealing details, but explained that heading into the school year authorities became aware of a generalized threat from a male student against Brooks’ students and staff. These threats were to be carried out on the first day of school.

Working with the RCMP, a provincial threat assessment specialist, the ministry of education, BC Mental Health and Addiction Services, Powell River General Hospital and Public Health Agency of Canada, the district developed a threat assessment and provided the youth, who made the threat, with 24-hour care coming into the first day of school. The first day of school went ahead as planned and without incident.

The student has been removed from school and is being assessed by health care professionals.

“I would also like to reassure parents and students that the school district and Powell River RCMP have taken this very seriously and are working together in concert with other agencies to ensure a safe environment for all,” read the letter, written by principal Kathy Rothwell. “Students at Brooks are not in danger due to this situation. Should this situation change, parents will be alerted.”
