City of Powell River Councillor Debbie Dee has some kind words for kindness.
During the Thursday, July 3, council meeting, Dee reported on the first annual compassion challenge. She said leading up to the event she was giving a lot of press to promote the activity.
“We challenged the citizens of Powell River to perform 10,000 random acts of kindness in one day,” she said. “We had an event down at Willingdon Beach, which, for the first year and [given] the weather, wasn’t badly attended.” It was on Friday, May 23.
Dee said the numbers weren’t “what they could be” because of what has been going on at schools locally and across the province. “We couldn’t get the numbers counted for all of the students,” she said. “We think it’s about double what we did.”
Dee said that even without the student figures, the number of random acts of kindness exceeded the goal.
“Of the 10,000 that we were aiming for, we did 10,950 acts of kindness that day in Powell River,” she said. “Things are still carrying on, so well done Powell River.”
Mayor Dave Formosa said the city has signed on to the Charter for Compassion Canada. Powell River’s involvement is featured at www.canadians4compassion.org, under the Compassionate City Campaigns header.
“We are a compassionate community, looking out for and caring for one another,” he said.
