University awards community living advocates

Ceremony recognizes work of Meeker and Taplay

Two Powell River women were honoured last month at Vancouver Island University (VIU)’s awards ceremony.

Malerie Meeker and Alison Taplay were both named for their exceptional community contributions.

Meeker won a Distinguished Alumni Service to Society Award for her work throughout her career in Powell River’s community living sector. She retired in 2010 as an instructor  and program coordinator at Powell River’s VIU campus. Since then, she has continued to work as an advocate for people with developmental disabilities. Her work has had profound impacts on individuals, families, early childhood practitioners and students.

Taplay won a VIU Teaching Award for design and practice that uses technology to enhance student learning. Taplay, in addition to teaching in the School and Community Support Worker Certificate program also provides coordination for the Human Service programs at Powell River campus. She brings over 30 years’ experience working in the community living sector and expertise in kindergarden to grade 12 classroom settings to her post-secondary instruction. Taplay is new to post-secondary instructing, but believes there is a unique synergy between her previous work and best practices for effective teaching and learning, whether face to face, online or using blended methods.
