University student wins cadet award

Officer Cadet Elizabeth Wegner has been awarded the Cadet Instructor Cadre Citizen (CIC) scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded to serving members of the CIC branch of the Canadian Armed Forces who are pursuing post-secondary education at an accredited university or college.

“The cadet program  aims to teach Canadian youth transferable, career-enhancing skills that will last a lifetime,” said Captain Nicole McKay, unit public affairs representative. “CIC officers are the youth training specialists in the Canadian Armed Forces responsible for the delivery of the cadet program.”

Each year, two $1,500-scholarships are awarded. More than 40 scholarships have been awarded over the years to CIC officers across the country.

Wegner is going into her third year at Nipissing University where she studies history and anthropology.

Wegner was a cadet in Powell River 2781 British Columbia Regiment, Duke of Connaught’s Own Rifles Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (RCACC) and now works with 204 Algonquin Regiment RCACC in North Bay, Ontario.
