QUICKLY EXTINGUISHED: Firefighters were called to a house at Marine Avenue and Terrace Street after an electrical fire was noted at the residence.

Powell River Fire Rescue responded to an electrical fire at Marine Avenue and Terrace Street that caused minor damage to a residence.

Deputy chief Rocky Swanson said the incident occurred on September 21.

“For some reason, some power lines were touching the side of a gentleman’s house,” said Swanson. “It started sparking and set the roof on fire.

“Our guys were there in a couple of minutes. The residents, a husband and wife, were in the house. He recognized the buzzing sound immediately and they got out.

“It was exceptionally dangerous because there was enough metal skirting around the house. Firefighters could not go near the house until BC Hydro showed up.”

Swanson said BC Hydro quickly dispatched a crew and they severed the line.

“Then, we were able to put the fire out,” said Swanson. “There was minimal damage to the house. The moment the power was cut we could put some water on it.”

Swanson said there was a really good response from all of the career and auxiliary staff.

“There were probably 20 of us there,” said Swanson. “We saved a home.”

He said the fire department had to shut traffic down on Terrace Street during the incident.

“There was a minor inconvenience to locals,” said Swanson, “but they were very accommodating.”
