City of Powell River Chief Administrative Officer Stan Westby is moving on to a new position.
Westby has been appointed the city manager for the City of Whitehorse.
Whitehorse Mayor Bev Buckway announced the appointment in a news release on Friday, June 29, which noted Westby won the job after an extensive nation-wide search. "Stan brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge and will prove instrumental in helping the City of Whitehorse work towards our community's goals," Buckway said in the release.
Westby has been the CAO in Powell River for nine years. He starts his new position on August 13.
"I am honoured to be given the opportunity to serve the citizens of Whitehorse in the capacity of chief administrative officer and look forward to working alongside you to create a community of long-standing sustainability," Westby said in the release. "My wife and I are eager to participate in this Wilderness City transition and are sincerely thankful for being given the chance to be of service."
Westby was also the co-chair of the International Government Finance Officers Association conference in Montreal, member of the Infrastructure Canada National Asset Management Group and is a member of the National Roundtable on Infrastructure.
Westby holds a Chartered Accountant designation as well as an accounting degree and Bachelor of Science degree from the University of British Columbia. He and his family moved to Powell River in 1999 when he became the director of financial services for the city.
According to the 2011 census, the City of Whitehorse has a population of 23,276. Its 2012 budget is $63 million.
Powell River Mayor Dave Formosa said Westby has served this community over the years through the good times and tougher times. “His ability to help us deal with the tough challenges that faced us along the way were very much appreciated by all,” Formosa said. “Stan was very dedicated to Powell River and decided that for the balance of his career he wanted to take one last posting to round out a successful career.”
Formosa pointed out that Westby’s contract is up for negotiation at this time and, in looking at his options, he has found this great opportunity to finish his career in an exciting, booming community. “From what Stan tells me of this opportunity he has been offered, he had no choice, but to do what is best to advance his career and for his family in a huge way.
Formosa said he appreciates all of Westby’s hard work and dedication to Powell River over all these years. “I say all the best of luck, but don't forget to come back and retire here in three or four years because Powell River will always be home to your family. I have a feeling we have not seen the end of Stan, so I will not say good-bye, but see you later, my friend!”
