December was considerably wetter and a little warmer than usual in 2014.
Weather observers at Powell River airport reported that 251.8 millimetres of rain fell during the month, over 100 millimetres more than the historical monthly average. A succession of tropical storms between December 5 and 11 brought 180 millimetres of rain alone.
Despite the storms, Powell River enjoyed about three hours more sunshine than average with 38.3 hours of bright sunshine recorded at the airport.
Temperature-wise, the warmest day recorded was on December 9, during the height of the pineapple express storms, at 14.1° Celsius.
The coldest day of the month was December 30 when the mercury dipped to –5.6°.
Despite the chilly conditions at the end of the month, December was warmer than usual. The month’s daily mean maximum temperature was 7° while its mean minimum was 1.6°. The month’s average temperature was 4.3°. That is compared to a historical average daily temperature, based on 30 years of collected climate data, of 3.1°.
