David Arthur Westgate, 71, of Powell River, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2025, at qathet General Hospital.
David was born on November 12, 1953, at the old Powell River General Hospital to Arthur and June Westgate. A lifelong resident of Powell River, he worked for many years as a skilled welder at the local pulp and paper mill — a tradesman known for his strong work ethic, practical skills and quiet generosity.
David was married to the love of his life, Wendy Westgate, for 43 years. Together, they raised two sons, Chase Arthur Westgate and Hunter William Westgate, who embody their father’s values of hard work, kindness and love for the outdoors.
David is also survived by his mother, June Westgate, three brothers Ed, Ernie and Rollie Westgate, and his sister Gail Westgate. Never was there a closer-knit family. He is also lovingly remembered by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A man of many talents, David enjoyed fishing, hunting, restoring gas engines and gardening. He also created stunning artwork from metal and wood, often for Wendy’s gardens — beautiful pieces that reflect his craftsmanship and care.
David never hesitated to help others, whether fixing a car, plowing a garden, digging a trench or clearing snow. He was always there when you needed him — even if it was just to share a beer and some conversation.
David touched countless lives with his generosity, wisdom and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David’s memory to the BC Cancer Foundation or the Giant Cell Arteritis Foundation.
As David would say, “It is what it is” — a phrase that captured his practical, grounded nature.
Cheers, David.
