A year on ice results in achievements

Powell River Skating Club looks back on a busy 12 months

Once again, Powell River Skating Club has had a busy and successful year.

As school started, so did the club’s classes. Canpower Skate filled quickly as hopeful rep hockey players honed their skating skills. As the serious hockey players exited the ice, the serious figure skaters stepped on. The Test skaters were eager to feel the ice and start training.

Beginning in December, the club participated in a series of public events. Skaters joined the fun at the Santa Parade, passing out candy. Next, the club hosted a happy and well-attended evening during Winter Wonderland for all the club’s skaters and their families. In the new year, 11 Test and Intro Test skaters performed at the PJ Skate. In February, two club members skated at a Powell River Kings’ game.

The club was also competing and testing. When three Test skaters—Emma Piniewski, Desiree Young and Kayden Piniewski—entered the BC Coast Regionals in Delta, BC, they all returned with bronzes. Then in April, seven club members skated at a test day in Sechelt, BC. The girls passed a total of 10 dance tests.

The year wouldn’t be complete without recognizing individual achievement. Cedar Galligos and Raine Thistlewaite received Canskater awards for being the most dedicated and improved skaters.

The club’s success comes from hard work and support by coach Nicole Rumley and instructor Ashley Pollinger.

Anyone interested in joining up for the start of the 2013 club year can do so from 1 to 3 pm on Saturday, September 7 in the lower level of Powell River Recreation Complex. Learn to skate, improving skating skills, Canskate and preschool classes are all available.
