Powell River Aces Volleyball players split into two teams and participated with 39 teams in the largest ever provincial under-13 volleyball championships held over the weekend in Vancouver.
Team Doug competed in Tier 1 and Team Diana competed in Tier 2.
Team Doug was placed in Pool B and ranked 13. “Our first match was against Burnaby-based Gecko, the number one team in BC,” said coach Doug Skinner. “We lost 25-10, 25-6. We didn’t handle their tough serving.”
Against Langley the team lost 25-14, 16-25, 5-15. “We won our last pool play match against White Rock 25-15, 25-20. That placed us third in our pool and put us up against Nanaimo Express.” Team Doug won 25-18, 25-14 placing the team in semifinals of Tier 1B.
“We played Seaside Moana winning the first set 25-14 but ended up losing the second and third sets 18-25, 11-15,” said Skinner.
Team Doug’s final match of the tournament was for third place in Tier 1B. “We played Focus Thunderbirds from Surrey. We lost the first game 18-25 but came back strong to win 25-19, 15-10.”
Most inspirational player for the team was Paige Lawson.
In Tier 2, Team Diana was placed in Pool D. “We won our first game against Kamloops 25-18; however lost game two in a heartbreaker 25-27 and just couldn’t pull it together in game three, losing 9-15,” said Skinner. Against Thunder U12 of University of British Columbia it lost another heartbreaker 23-25, 25-27.
Team Diana then played Kahuna White from Delta and lost 25-17, 14-25, 11-15. In playoffs Team Diana lost against Langley Force 25-19, 21-25, 10-15.
The final match for the team was against Langley Volleyball Club and the team won convincingly 25-19, 25-14. Most inspirational player selected for the team was Sylena Romanyshyn.
Players this year were: Matilda Bertrand, Melinda Boyd, Maegan Brown, Chloe Elzer, Kate Fisher, Liz Janze-Goodfellow, Hailey Kenmuir, Lawson, Hope Lechner, Lauren Mander, Annika Pfeifer, Claudia Piccinin, Kayla Reed, Romanyshyn, Tyana Sacree, Meggan Skorey, Katie Tuba, Amelia Vincent and Maddison Yule.
