Catching cod on Canada Day

Rotary sponsors youth competition

Youth around Powell River will have a chance to compare their catches at the Canada Day Youth Saltwater Fishing Derby Monday, July 1.

The derby, which is presented by the Rotary Club of Powell River Sunshine, allows youth, aged 14 years and under, to fish off any wharf, pier, or shore anywhere from Saltery Bay to Lund. All boats, however, are off-limits.

A weigh-in will take place at Willingdon Beach from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm under the Rotary tent. Prizes are given for the largest ling cod, the largest non-ling cod, the best photo and the most unique fish. Winners for best photo will be announced 48 hours after the derby.

Participants are reminded to follow the BC Tidal Fishing Regulations. If youth catch any fish below the legal size, they are asked to take a photo of the fish with a legible measuring strip and then release it. Photos will only be accepted if they are signed by an adult witness.

Fishers are also encouraged to wear personal flotation devices while using a pier, wharf or dock, and to have adult supervision if underage.

A fishing licence is mandatory. Licences are available at Marine Traders, Powell River Outdoors, and online, and are free for youth under 15.

Registration, available at Marine Traders and Powell River Outdoors, isĀ  $2, which will be put toward prizes.
