Cobras victorious in Victoria tournament

Solid record bodes well for provincial qualifying rounds

Powell River’s U13 girls’ rep soccer team, Cobras, recently visited Victoria to play in the Lakehill Soccer Association Girls’ Fall Classic tournament.

In the Cobras’ first match they played well, winning 2-0 against Peninsula. A match against host Lakehill team, who played defensively throughout, held them to a goalless tie at 90 minutes with many close calls.

The third match pitted the top two teams in the division against each other. Cobras’ opponents, Gordon Head, were an excellent team and fans witnessed a great game that went back and forth. With the game looking as though it would end in a draw the Cobras came through with a late goal giving them a 1-0 victory.

With two wins and one draw, and not surrendering a goal, Cobras faced Juan De Fuca, leaders of the division, in the final. However, two clerical errors and a comedy of errors from the tournament organizers prevented the game from being played and the tournament directors declared the two teams co-champions for the U13 division.

Strong team defence led the way as usual for the Cobras who in seven tournament games thus far this season have yielded only one goal against which was a penalty shot. Doing the damage up front at the tournament were Rachel Horspool, Calli-Ann Abbott and Braea Mayenburg. The hard-working midfield consisted of Allahna Somji, Callie McNeil, Brittany Harry, Ondreah Kristof, MacKenzie Balzan, Santana Heutzleman and Sydney Hanson. Anchoring the back line were Emily White, Ricci Leitch, Emily Mayenburg, Sydney Liknes, Carolyn Smith and Cassidy Ball. Earning the shut outs in goal were Elise Hocking and Destiny Dendewicz.

The girls are now gearing up for their first provincial cup qualifying matches set to begin in February.
