Confidence wins through for soccer team

United advances to next round

Powell River United O35 Football Club travelled to Victoria on Saturday to start its bid for a provincial berth in the first round of the Tony Grover Cup.

United was matched up against the Uvic Alumni which has been a top team in the Masters A division for the past few years.

United had a strong roster and was feeling confident about its chances for a good result. The game started with wet and windy conditions as both teams took the first 10 minutes to feel each other out. United came out of the gates firing on all cylinders and began to pressure the home team.

United was first to get on the score sheet when Dean Piccinin buried his shot into the back of the net past the diving Uvic keeper.

Both teams battled back and forth with the United back line, consisting of Derek and Robbie Veenhof, Tony Rice and Chris McDonough, doing a great job to shut down the Uvic chances on net. Goalie Rick Bombardir did his usual job keeping the score 1-0 United at half time.

The second half saw the wind pick up to storm force and torrential rain hammered both teams as they fought on the field.

Play was again fairly even with Uvic having a few great chances on net but again Bombardir was there to keep it at zero. United also had some good chances on net but were unlucky to not get another goal.

The game ended with United knocking Uvic out of the Tony Grover Cup and moving on to the next round of play.

United will travel to Victoria again to play against Westcastle at 6 pm on Saturday, February 22 at Westhills Stadium.
