Last-minute preparations are underway for River Town Riot! on Saturday, July 14.

Pow! Town Roller Girls will battle Brick House Betties in their first official bout in Hap Parker Arena at Powell River Recreation Complex.

Pow! Town Roller Derby is a member of the Salish Sea Rollers League along with three other teams, including their rivals, the Betties from Courtenay.

Some of the Pow! Town skaters have played against some of the Betties in local scrimmages but “this is a first bout for the local team so excitement is building for this event,” said local squad founder Blonde Slambition (CaroleAnn Leishman).

Junior derby girls ages five and up from Powell River and Vancouver Island will faceoff at 5 pm in a scrimmage, helping to warm up fans for the main event.

“Townsite Brewing on tap in the beer garden and Dominion Lending Community Event Trailer will be serving up great food for everyone to munch on while they cheer on the teams,” added Slambition. “A&W will be serving root beer floats down on the floor so audience members are encouraged to head down to the floor level to check out the roller derby merchandise tables and have a root beer float.”

Doors open at 4:30 pm. After the junior derby scrimmage, the main event starts at 6 pm. Tickets are only $5 and children under 12 years old get in for free.

“Bring the whole family down to check out some live roller derby action which is definitely fun for the whole family,” said Slambition. “It’s a different sport for our community to support.”
