Juniors split with Victoria
Powell River’s Junior B hockey team split a two-game series with Victoria over the weekend. On Saturday they slammed the visitors 5-2 and then lost a heartbreaker to them 8-7 on Sunday.
On Saturday, Powell River’s Gord Boudais opened the scoring at the 5:26 mark. Victoria replied with 15 seconds left in the period.
The second frame was scoreless but Powell River went on the rampage in the third scoring at 1:50 (Mike McKenzie), 12:52 and 14:18 (Gord DeWynter), and 15:57 (Dennis Housmain). Victoria got its second goal at 19:10.
Powell River picked up nine of the 17 minors handed out. Victoria’s Karpalainen got at 10-minute misconduct and a game misconduct.
Len Anglin was called upon to make 23 saves as the Victoria goalie made 28.
On Sunday, Gord Ross picked up a hat-trick in the losing effort. Victoria opened the scoring at the 7:10 mark. Powell River tied it up at 11:56 with P. Bergeron scoring. Locals went ahead on Ross’s first goal at 15:58.
Victoria then scored three before Boudais got one back at 13:36 of the second. Victoria then scored three in a row. Powell River started a four-goal scoring streak at 5:34 of the third. Scoring first was Ross, then Bergeron, then Ross again, and Dennis Huisman.
The winning goal came at 13:11 of the third, Victoria’s Purdy denting the mesh.
Powell River outshot Victoria 36-25, and picked up three of the six minors. D. Riley got three minutes for high sticking.
