Under-14 side to represent Vancouver Island
Girls earn a kick at provincials

Powell River Surge under-14 girl’s soccer team won a birth in the provincial championships with an away win against Peninsula Soccer Club in Sidney on March 2.

Surge qualified for the game having defeated Campbell River and then Comox in the preliminary rounds. Powell River, always known for its contingent of vocal travelling fans, would have been proud of the large group of family and friends at the field to encourage Surge on.

The game was played on a less than hospitable field with standing water and mud located in some prime areas. It was a midfield battle to start, with neither team having any clear chances but attempting to maintain possession across the soggy field. The break came for Powell River with only eight minutes left when Bayley Hollingsworth drifted a cross over that eluded the Peninsula goalkeeper. The ball fell to Kate Fisher in the six-yard box who ran the ball across the goal line with a Peninsula defender in close pursuit.

With the win, Surge will represent Vancouver Island at the 2013 provincial championships at Inter-River Park in North Vancouver from July 4 to 7. “The girls have worked very hard and deserve the chance to see how they stack up against the best in the province,” said coach Ian Boyd. Incidentally, Boyd has promised to wear a cheerleading uniform if the girls can make the final. If that is not incentive, what is?

Playing on this year’s team are Katie Tuba, Leive Kaptein, Ciara Maguire, Sydney Rairie, Melinda Boyd, Josie Maguire, Hollingsworth, Maddison Yule, Emily Labree, Hannah Pederson, Kiely Tietzen, Sylena Romanyshyn, Tyannika Lam, Meggan Skorey, Hope Lechner, Kate Fisher, Lauren Mander and Darian Gaudet assisted by Boyd and assistant coach Scott Fisher.
