Gymnastic competitors representing Brooks Secondary School and Powell River Christian School faced competition from 21 other high schools at Vancouver Island zone trials in Comox last month. Eight athletes earned spots in the BC High School Gymnastics Championships, which will be held from Thursday, March 8, to Saturday, March 10, in Burnaby.
Powell River Christian School representative Hillary English (level four) earned gold all-around placement during the competition as well as gold on beam, silver on bars and a bronze on vault.
Brooks sent a contingent of 12 athletes to the trials. Seven of the teammates earned berths in the provincials and eight finished on the podium, including Jessi Burge (level one), who claimed silver all-around, gold in vault and silver in bars, beam and floor; Jordyn MacKenzie (level two), who earned bronze in bars; Naraa Little (level three), who brought home gold for beam and silver for vault; Trystinna Bailey (level four), who won silver in all-around, gold in floor, silver in vault and bronze in bars; Rachel Peckford (level four), who earned a gold for beam; Ekaterina Senilova (level five), who claimed gold all-around, gold for vault and beam, silver for bars and bronze for floor; Katie Dohm (level five), who brought home silver all-around, gold in bars and silver in vault, beam and floor; and Dylan Werner (level four), who earned gold all-around and gold in all individual events.
Alessa Plisson (level one), Kaitlyn McKay (level two), Kate Forbes (level two) and Rebeca Bailey (level three) also competed in the zone trials for Brooks.
Gymnasts who gained entry into the provincial championships are training and preparing for the trip and competition at Moscrop Secondary School in Burnaby, with the exception of Dohm and Little, who are unable to attend due to prior commitments.
