Horseshoe pitching completes its flinging season

Hubick duo participates in world competition

With excitement boiling as play headed toward the end of the season, Powell River Horseshoe Pitching Club members are now looking forward to the season’s beginning next spring.

As well as attending regular tournaments on Vancouver Island and the Fraser Valley, pitchers travelled to provincial competition in Penticton and Frank and Lorraine Hubick participated in the world’s tournament in Utah with over 1,000 other competitors at the end of July.

Results for all tournaments follow:

Memorial Mixed Open, Ladysmith, June 29: Lorraine third in class B; Frank first in class G; Harry Bey fifth in class G; Pauline Bey eighth in class H.

Memorial Open, Ladysmith, June 30: Lorraine fourth in class B; Harry first in class E; Frank third in class E.

BC International Highwayman Open, Abbotsford, July 6: Lorraine fourth in class B; Frank third in elders’ class E.

World’s tournament, St. George, Utah, United States, July 22 to August 3: Frank seventh out of 15 in elders’ class Q; Lorraine 10th out of 15 in class D.

Victoria Saanich Open, August 17: Lorraine fifth in class A; Frank fourth in class C.

Victoria Open, August 18: Lorraine second in class B; Frank third in elders’ class D.

Island/Powell River Championship, Powell River, August 24 and 25: Jim Hoffman second in men’s class A; Derek Boyes second and Serge Dube third in class B; Andrew Harrington second, Glen Woloschuk third and Gary Thorpe fourth in class C. Carol Skrodolis first and Lorraine third in women’s class A; Betty Blacklock second, Margie Woloschuk fourth, Diane Norman fifth and Sandra Hanson sixth in class B; Marguerite Kitchen first, Sylvia Sheldon second, Irene Smith third, Paige Nahornoff fourth and Faye Harvey fifth in class C. Bob Simmons third and Lionel Hanson fifth in elders’ class A; Neil Groat first, Norm Siren second, Vito Cimaglia third and Frank fourth in class B; Harry first, Bruce Trotter second and Stuart Ashworth third in class C.

BC Championships, Penticton, August 31 and September 1: Glen third in men’s class E. Carol first in women’s class A; Lorraine second in class C; Margie second and Sandra fourth in class E; Pauline fourth in class F. Lionel third in elders’ class C; Frank second in class F; Harry first in class G.

Victoria Autumn Classic Mixed Open, September 7 and 8: Carol third in class A, Lorraine sixth in class C, Frank first in class H1.

At the club’s annual awards banquet, held October 26, trophies were presented to the following winners: Ashworth received the Smith trophy for best novice; Siren received the Cec Coultry trophy; Blacklock received the Al Hoffman trophy; Skrodolis received the Ted Simmons trophy; Sandra and Harry received the doubles trophy; the Nick Rusnak trophy for most improved over 20 per cent went to Norman and Simmons; and both the league trophy and league playoff went to Ringer Kings team of Dube, Blacklock, Russ Jones, Smith and Harrington.
