Horseshoes fly during successful season

Local participants find many away and home tournaments to participate in

An entire season of horseshoes has come and gone and Powell River Horseshoe Pitching Club has lots to be proud of.

“The success of the Powell River pitchers was overwhelming,” said participant Lorraine Hubick, “and such achievements are making everyone eager for the 2013 season.”

As a recap of the season, from May to September, local pitching shoes just kept flying toward the focal point, a stake 30 to 40 feet away.

Starting off on the road was the first tournament, the Victoria Open, where Lorraine placed first in the Women’s A class and Frank Hubick placed second in the Elders’ class D.

Next stop was Ladysmith, where Lorraine placed third in Mixed Open (men and women) and Frank placed fifth in class F. The following day, Lorraine placed second in Women’s A class and Frank placed third in Elders’ class C.

Challenging the Canadians in Saskatoon, Lorraine placed fifth in Women’s A and Frank placed third in the Elders’ F class.

BC International in Abbotsford was held mid-summer where Lorraine placed third in Women’s A and Frank placed first in Elders’ D class.

At the Ladysmith Mixed Open, with men and women in each class, Lorraine placed fifth in class B, Leonard MacLean came first in Class F, Sandra MacLean came first in Class G, Frank was third in Class G, Margie Woloschuk came in Class I and Glen Woloschuk was fifth in Class I.

The following day, this time with men and women separated, Leonard came fourth in Men’s class C, Glen was fifth in class D, Lorraine came first in Women’s class A, Sandra came first in class C, Margie came first in class D and Frank was fifth in Elders’ class C.

At the Saanich Open Lorraine was sixth in Women’s class A and Frank fifth in Elders’ class C.

The BC Championship was held in Victoria at the beginning of September. Lorraine was fifth in Women’s class B, Sandra Hanson first in class F, Lionel Hanson third in Men’s class B and Frank second in Elders’ class E.

At the Victoria Classic Mixed Open, Carol Skrodolis came first in class A, Lorraine was second in class B, Lionel was second in class C, Leonard fifth in class F, S. Hanson was first in class G, Frank was fifth in class G, Sandra was third in class H, Margie was fifth in class H and Glen was sixth in class I.

The Vancouver Island and Powell River championships were held in Ladysmith mid-September. Serge Dube was first in Men’s class C, Leonard came second in class C, Glen was fifth in class D, Skrodolis was first in Women’s class A, Lorraine came first in class B, Sandra was third in class C, S. Hanson was sixth in class C, Margie was second in class D, Lionel was fourth in Elders’ class B and Frank came fourth in class D.

Local tournaments took place in June and August with participants visiting from Vancouver Island.

June mixed open results:

Class A - first Carol Skrodolis, second Doris Wilton of Winfield, third Kathie Juteau of Ladysmith.

Class B - first Jim Hoffman, second Bob Simmons, third Paul Onyschtschuk of Port Alberni.

Class C - first Betty Blacklock, second Leonard MacLean, third Neil Groat.

Class D - first Serge Dube, second Sandra MacLean, third Ed Skrodolis.

Class E - first Sandra Hanson, second Norm Siren, third Frank Hubick.

Class F - first Diane Norman, second Paul Fridman, third Stuart Ashworth.

Fall wind-up mixed open in August results:

Class A - first Jerry Melissa of Victoria, second Lindsay Hodgins of Victoria, third Carol Skrodolis.

Class B - first Lorraine Hubick, second Susan MacDonald of Victoria, third Jean Farris.

Class C - first Mike Potrebenko of Port Alberni, second Pat Stevens of Victoria, third Betty Blacklock.

Class D - first Norm Siren, second Vito Cimaglia, third Serge Dube.

Class E - first Russ Jones, second Sandra Hanson, third Margie Woloschuk.

Class F - first Dennis O'Malley, second Diane Norman, third Marguerite Kitchen.

Class G - first Glen Woloschuk, second Paul Fridman, third Lillian Bourassa.
