Ice competition heats up house

Sunshine Coast senior curlers seek trophy

A curling competition that has been taking place since the 1970s continues Wednesday, February 11, at Powell River Curling Club.

The second half of a home-and-home tournament with Gibsons Curling Club begins at 10 am and continues until 4 pm when the annual trophy is presented.

“We are up against it as Gibsons is up by an almost unbeatable 10-and-a-half points after the first leg of the showdown,” said Jim Sawka, who has been seniors coordinator for the local club for four years.

Gibsons captured the trophy last year while Powell River had been victorious for the previous four years running.

Four rinks from each community will face off, playing three games each. Some 16 to 18 curlers will be coming from Gibsons while Powell River has 20 seniors to make up the foursomes, including spares. Each game is worth two points. To make the total of 26, there is a shootout draw to the button and take out by two leads, two seconds, two thirds and two skips. A half point for each round results in two more points.

“With a total of 26 points up for grabs, Powell River has to capture 11 or 12 games to emerge as the series winner,” Sawka explained. “Hopes are high we can do it with home club advantage.”

Spectators are welcome to come and watch. Readers interested in joining seniors curling are invited to attend any Tuesday at 1 pm. Play ends in March but will resume in October.
