Island triathlon receives a makeover

Event has new date

Athletes and non-athletes alike are invited once again to participate in the annual Savary Island Triathlon. Normally held at the end of July, this year the triathlon takes place on Saturday, August 17.

The race begins at 9:45 am near Savary’s wharf, when Clansman Pipe Band will play the swimmers to the start of the race. The course consists of a 700-metre swim, a 12-kilometre cycle and a five-kilometre run.

Organizers encourage everybody who wants to participate to register early. Those interested can sign up through the triathlon’s new website, which also has information about the race. Online registration ends Thursday, August 15.

Registration can also be done at the grey house in front of the barge landing on Savary, starting Friday, August 9, and at the registration stand on the morning of the race from 8 am to 9:30 am.

Signup is $40 per individual, or per person in a team of two, and $100 for a team of three. It includes an official T-shirt and a light lunch. Participants can enter in the recreational or competitive division.

A bake sale at the end of the race will benefit Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department.

Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in different categories, with the top overall woman winning the Savary Island Fishbowl, and the top overall man winning the new Savary Island Cup.

Businesses who wish to donate prizes are asked to contact John McIntosh at [email protected].
