Karate team picks up medals

Canadian Martial Arts Academy Karate Team recently travelled to Campbell River to compete in its first tournament of the season: the Campbell River Shito Ryu Challenge cup. Fifteen students returned with 29 medals between them for their participation in Kata, Weapons and Sparring. These awards included:

Outstanding male athlete: Craig Long.

Outstanding female athlete: Jennifer Kennedy.

Outstanding junior male athlete: Cody Oliver.

Male spokesmanship award: Cameron Leigh.

Medal results are as follows:

Oliver: first place Kata, first place Weapons, second place Sparring.

Brooklyn Vanderkemp: first place Sparring, first place Kata.

Sawyer Long: second place Sparring, second place Kata.

McKenna Long: third place Sparring.

Bev Parsons: first place Kata, second place Sparring.

Kolten Laine: first place Sparring, third place Kata.

Leigh: second place Kata, third place Sparring.

Craig Long: first place Kata, first place Sparring, second place Weapons.

Ryan Schmeister: first place Weapons, third place Kata, third place Sparring.

Bekka Parsons: third place Sparring, third place Kata.

Kennedy: first place Kata, first place Sparring.

The following students also did extremely well, placing between fourth and 11th in their categories: Chloe Labree, Kylea Masters, Devin Cleghorn, Ashley Parsons.

The team’s next competition was in Seattle on Saturday, November 10.
