Lloyd earns silver and bronze

A Powell River junior athlete who has won widely in national and international judo competitions is continuing her winning ways in wrestling, now at university.

Abby Lloyd won silver and bronze medals at the Nordhagen Classic open and junior wrestling competitions January 3 and 4 in Calgary.

Lloyd, a freshman at Burnaby’s Simon Fraser University (SFU), earned the silver medal Sunday, January 4, in the 48-kilogram/105.5-pound weight class in the junior tournament, losing by fall to Sariyah Jones of the USA Cadet national program in the gold medal match.

SFU Athletics reported that Lloyd defeated Theresa Rankin of Team USA 13–0 and Sarah Gregory of Cochrane, Alberta 12–1 before losing in the final match. Gold medalist Jones went undefeated in her weight class on Sunday, winning all matches by either pin or technical fall.

Saturday, January 3, in the senior competition, Lloyd earned a 3–1 decision over teammate Darby Huckle of Sarnia, Ontario to capture the bronze medal in the 48-kilogram weight class. Lloyd easily won her opening two matches over Grace Paxton of Cumberland (10–0) and Augusta Eve of Team Impact (11–1) before losing to the eventual silver medalist, Natasha Kramble of Saskatoon, by fall. Lloyd came back to earn a spot in the consolation final against Huckle with a 10–4 decision over Annie Montieth of Saskatoon.
