Mini-tournament allows players to team up

Solid play leads into regular season

Powell River United over 35 football club started its year by travelling to Qualicum for a mini-tournament in which each team played each other once in shortened 40-minute games.

United travelled down with a full roster of 17 players and was looking forward to the start of the new season.

The first game had United playing to a 3-0 win over Campbell River. Goals were scored by Lee Illing, Shehzad Somji and Rino Parise.

In the second game United played against Comox and after 40 minutes won 1-0. The lone goal was again scored by Illing.

United’s third game was against Qualicum. After the first 20 minutes the score was tied 0-0. A quick lapse in the back line allowed Qualicum to have a two-man breakaway against goalie Rick Bombardir. Bombardir made a great save on the initial shot but had no chance on the rebound. Qualicum took the lead 1-0. United carried the play but ran out of time to get the equalizer.

It was a successful day, with United coming out of the tournament on top.

United is looking to have another successful season after two league titles and deep runs into the Tony Grover and Provincial Cup play over the last couple of seasons.

The team’s first regular season game is at 12:30 pm on Sunday, September 29 at Timberlane Park.
