Players finish in top spot

Eyes focus upon provincial playoffs

Powell River United over 35 football club took to the pitch for its final league game of the season this past weekend and faced Qualicum on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Unfortunately, Qualicum was only able to bring nine players so United lent the visitors a couple of players to even up the numbers.

The game was pretty evenly matched with both teams having chances on net at either end of the park. United opened the scoring when Kyle Vasseur made a nice run up the pitch, beat a couple of defenders, and put the ball into the back of the net. The half ended with United up 1-0.

The second half was much the same as the first with both teams again having chances on net. Goalie Rick Bombardir was up to the task and secured the lead by keeping the ball out of the United net.

Qualicum tied the game up when Lee Illing (a United player on Qualicum’s team) received a through ball, beat Bombardir to it and slotted it away to tie the game 1-1. The game continued to go back and forth with both goalies doing well to keep the game even. The game ended with a score of 1-1.

United’s season ended with an undefeated record of eight wins, zero losses and two ties giving it the Upper Island Masters League title for the second straight season.

United now has to turn its focus onto the BC Provincial Cup playoffs which start this coming weekend. The playoffs consist of the top 16 teams in the province competing for the chance to hoist the Deryl Hughes Cup. The tournament consists of a random draw to determine the games and single loss elimination. United drew a home game for the first round of play and will meet Westside FC from Vancouver Metro Soccer League. Westside is the defending BC Provincial Cup Champion from the 2012 season. Game time is 2 pm on Sunday, April 14 at Timberlane Park.
