Powell River hosts Vancouver Island teams for annual invitational event

A big weekend for youth soccer is about to get underway in Powell River. A total of 480 players on 24 teams from the Upper Island Soccer Association and Lower Island Youth Soccer will be in town on Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29 for the 54th Island Invitational Cup, also known as the Tournament of Champions.

Four Powell River Youth Soccer Association teams will be in action, including U14 boys Energy, U16 boys Panthers, U14 girls Strikers and U15 girls Eagles. All hometown teams will represent the Upper Island on Saturday, April 28, against rival sides from the Lower Island in single-round knockout games to decide the cup winner in their respective age groups.

At 12:30 pm, Eagles play at Timberlane Park against Cowichan; Panthers are in action against Juan de Fuca on the turf at Brooks Secondary School; and Energy plays its game at Sunset Park against Victoria’s Bays United. Strikers have a 2:30 pm start at Sunset Park against Cowichan.

Sunday games also take place at 12:30 and 2:30 pm and feature out-of-town teams only.
