Powell River Regals host Knights for first time

Local senior hockey club looks to bounce back from early season losses

Powell River Regals continue to search for their first win of the season when South Island Knights make their first-ever visit to Hap Parker Arena on Saturday, December 3. Game time is 7:30 pm.

One of four teams participating in the newly formed and revamped West Coast Senior Hockey League, Knights will be looking to post their third straight win over the Regals after sweeping a two-game series by scores of 4-3 and 8-0 in Fuller Lake to start the season.

Regals player/coach Andy Welsh expects a better result in the rematch.

“We have a couple of games under our belt now and more practices, which makes a big difference; our conditioning is better,” said Welsh. “We’re ready for those guys to come and play us at home.”

In their most recent contest, a home game on November 19, Regals dropped a 5-4 overtime decision to North Island Capitals.

“Ryan Fairgray was strong in net and our younger players were blending in with veterans like Derek Jantz, Joe Calderon and Rick McLaren,” said manager Tod English. “They’re having fun, adjusting to the physical play and getting better every game.”

Veteran John Coyle recorded a hat-trick and Welsh also scored once for the home team. Former Regal John Murgatroyd scored the winning goal in extra time for the Capitals.
