Quick end upsets fighter

Opponent bows out in second round

Mixed martial arts fighter Michael Hill is disappointed with his recent win in Vancouver.

“I’m pretty upset with the way it went,” said Hill. “You don’t want to win like that.”

Hill, who calls Powell River home, was fighting on Saturday, December 7, at the PNE Agrodome in a match against Richard Arsenault. The preliminary bout ended prematurely in the second round when Hill was awarded a technical knock-out after Arsenault’s groin or hamstring injury made him unable to continue.

Arsenault finished the first round and limped back to his corner, but early in the second round he could not support his own weight. A doctor was brought in to make a call and while Arsenault insisted he could fight by standing on one leg, it was decided that it would be unwise to do so. Hill was awarded the win.

Hill said he spent eight weeks training for the bout and it was unfortunate that the fight ended after only a minute because he did not have the opportunity to “showcase his skills to his friends, family and fans.”

“I was really excited to be fighting in Vancouver and be a part of World Series of Fighting’s first Canadian event,” said Hill. “There hasn’t been an event like this in Vancouver since the [Ultimate Fighting Championship] was here two years ago.” Hill has a multi-fight contract with Aggression Fighting Championship, which was bought out by the American mixed martial arts league World Series of Fighting to gain entry to the Canadian market.

Coming off the weekend’s bout, Hill said he is really focused on travelling to places like Brazil and Thailand where martial arts began and to train with top masters in the discipline.
