Parking lot hockey marks BC Day

Powell River residents were treated to a stick-smashing, pavement-pounding good time at the fourth annual First Credit Union Road Hockey Showdown, on BC Day, Monday, August 6.

Provincial pride shone in stunning display at the holiday bash as sunny skies saw teams in the youth and adult divisions battle it out for the coveted gold medal. Keeping things light and festive, there were also prizes for best team uniform and hardest shot.

University of British Columbia students Kailee Giles and Sarah Barton-Bridges put the event together as part of First Credit Union’s community involvement initiative. “The tournament is a way to celebrate BC Day,” said Giles. “Getting people together, being active, having fun; hockey has a way of doing just that.”

Giles and Barton-Bridges, both of whom grew up in Powell River, arranged everything from advertising and venue setup to sponsorship and prizes.

The Hornets won the youth division, followed by the Devils. For the adults, Sunshine Coast Dirt Bags beat Kelly Creek Zombies.

Devils wore the best uniform in the youth division and Zombies the best in the adult division.

Hardest shot was won by Keagan Abbott at 64 miles per hour for the youth competition, and Tim Wilson, 95 miles per hour, for the adults.
